LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A Madrid court has released a 70-year-old man who admitted to helping his 61-year-old wife end her life.
The case of Angel Hernandez, who made a video of his wife’s last days, has ignited a national debate in Spain about assisted suicide, which is illegal.
Hernandez says his wife, Maria Jose Carrasco, was diagnosed 30 years ago with multiple sclerosis and had for years asked him to help her die.
Right-to-die groups supported Hernandez’s choice, but the Spanish Bishops’ Conference opposed what he did.
A judge released Hernandez late Thursday after a preliminary hearing.
The judge said in a statement that Carrasco was in a terminal phase of illness and said Hernandez admitted helping his wife commit suicide.
A judicial investigation into the case is continuing.
